It’s a small, but perfectly formed, indie drama that has somehow found itself at the centre of this year’s awards hype. Based on the writer-director’s experiences, we watch as an awkward,
self-obsessed, teenager develops into an empathetic young woman. Christine (Saoirse Ronan) is an arty high school student who has pretentiously given herself the nickname of Lady Bird.
Despite not being academically strong, she dreams of leaving her home town Sacramento for college on the East Coast. As her father (Tracy Letts) is jobless, this dream infuriates her
overworked mother (Laurie Metcalf), a nurse. So she and her father secretly make a financial-aid application to a New York university. Other high school movies have gone looking for big
issues but Gerwig’s script finds wry humour in the small dramas that make up every teenager’s life. It’s this restraint that gives the film its credibility and charm. Lower your expectations
and it should work on you.
