A North Yorkshire seaside town has been named as one of the best places to eat in the UK - so we thought we would check it out for ourselves. Fish Cottage Café in Sandsend, near Whitby, has
been listed in The Sunday Times as one of the best places to eat by the sea in the UK. Not only has it been praised for its food and being compared to Cornwall but for its location - which
is just meters away from the beach - as well as its popularity with tourists and locals no matter the weather. In the article, the Times wrote: “This coastal café is in a posh pocket of the
North Yorkshire coast near Whitby that has plenty to offer - a 3km beach, great rockpooling and an excellent reputation for good food. "Among the highlights is this popular beachfront
café. Enjoy fish and chips in the garden or take a box of its crab-loaded chips onto the beach. The Whitby crab crumpet cannot be missed, neither can their bowls of ‘fishghetti’ pasta."
So after taking in the guidance, and the advantage of the nice weather, I decided to take the trip down to the North Yorkshire coast to test out how good the food really was. After parking
at East Row car park, I followed the path to the beach where I found Fish Cottage packed with locals and tourists enjoying their food. The café took me by surprise as it was a small bungalow
with a red-tiled roof, but with a hatched opening, it was almost like being abroad in somewhere like Greece - giving me the Mamma Mia! film set vibes. There were two options, either sit
inside the restaurant or eat inside the garden. So, as it was a sunny albeit cloudy day, I found a table in the garden and sat down after ordering a Yorkshire sausage and chips (which came
to £9, plus 2x 60p for ketchup). The atmosphere was lovely with dogs on leads sitting by their owners, people coming back from the beach with soaked hair and flip flops on and going inside
to get changed out of their swimwear. It was a very chilled place to just sit and take it all in - so I did not mind that the wait for food was 10 minutes. Since the tables were so big, one
person taking up all the space looked odd, so I invited a couple who were looking for somewhere to sit to sit-down next to me and we got talking which helped pass the time. While talking,
the husband and his wife, showed me some fossil finds from the beach - just yards away from the restaurant. The husband laughed as he explained to his wife that he wanted to bring a
crab's old shell back to the caravan they were staying in and she said no because of the smell. I told him that I agreed with her as I could imagine it would be awful. Finally, the food
was ready to be picked up. I knew this because I was given a buzzer that went off like an alarm on the table. I nearly jumped to the floor as it vibrated so much. It also gave me a big
shock as it was very loud. Returning back to the table, I pierced the sausage immediately to hear the crunch of the batter and steam rising off it - a warning it was hot. As I took a bite, I
knew I should have waited with the steam billowing out of the pierced batter, but I just couldn't help but continue eating. I made sure to blow on it to cool it down while I ate more
of the meal but nothing could prepare me for how delicious it actually was. Sadly, at this point, it started to rain but it did not dampen the mood as I looked around and people still
continued to enjoy their meals. The sausage was well-cooked and juicy on the inside, and was a perfect compliment with chips being just the right size for a lunch time meal. Additionally,
the plentiful amount of chips were also delicious as each of them were crispy, fluffy and seasoned beautifully. The salty air and the sound of distance waves crashing against the shore
somehow also made it a lot more enjoyable than just having it at home. However, sadly, the rain began to get heavier and like others, I had to grab my coat and dash to my car to finish the
meal. Overall, we definitely agree that should be one place you should visit especially if you want to be 'transported' to another country - while still being in God's Own
Country. _GET ALL THE LATEST AND BREAKING NORTH YORKSHIRE NEWS STRAIGHT TO YOUR INBOX BY_ _ SIGNING UP TO OUR NEWSLETTER HERE. _ _ _
