At least 96 schools nationwide have stopped blocking educational websites that favorably depict lesbians, gays, bisexuals, and transgender people, according to a report from the American
Civil Liberties Union, which credits its “Don’t Filter Me” campaign for the changes. The ACLU has sued one district over its Internet filtering and is considering litigation against several
others, the report says. In some cases, districts have contended that changing their filtering practices would violate the federal Children’s Internet Protection Act. The campaign, the
report says, has also prompted reforms in five filtering-software companies in how they categorize websites that offer LGBT-related content.
