GUWAHATI: Assam inches towards 7,000 COVID-19 cases after 273 new cases were detected on the state on Friday, June 26, taking the total toll to 6,919 cases. The city of Guwahati alone saw a


spike in the total number of COVID-19 positive cases on Friday. The city witnessed 203 COVID-19 positive cases. Health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma took to Twitter and wrote, “Alert ~ 273

lockdown in the city effective from Sunday midnight. Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma yesterday said that the lockdown comes in place as a substantial number of COVID-19 cases are being reported from


the city. This lockdown will be even stricter than the nationwide Lockdown 1, as no commercial establishments, grocery shops, vegetable vendors or any kind of services will be allowed to


open, except for pharmacies and hospitals. Sarma in a recent Tweet also stated that an 800-bed temporary hospital for COVID-19 patients is now under construction at the Khanapara field in

essentials Meanwhile, the recovery rate continues to be high at 63.4% in the state with 214 patients now being discharged after they tested negative for the novel coronavirus. Sarma tweeted,
