The students were protesting a committee's decision to expel a girl student of the faculty. She was allegedly caught stealing coins from the paid phone inside the institute's

premises some weeks ago. Fifty students of BEd and MEd registered their protest against the vice-chancellor of Gujarat Vidyapith on Wednesday. Needless to say they did it the Gandhian way!

These students sat on the road leading to the institute and began weaving khadi on their ratiyo (spinning wheel).  The students were protesting a committee's decision to expel a girl

student of the faculty. She was allegedly caught stealing coins from the paid phone inside the institute's premises some weeks ago. The committee on Monday decided to ban the girl from

the institute for a year and asked her to take her leaving certificate. According to vice-chancellor Sudarshan Ayangar, in the past too, he had received complaints against the girl. The

situation worsened after three more students of class XI were caught stealing coins. These girls said that they were taught the trick by the B.Ed girl. Looking at the seriousness of the

matter, a committee was formed comprising the vice-chancellor, chancellor and principal of the college. The committee decided not to show any mercy and asked the B.Ed girl to collect her

leaving certificate. This decision irked the students who decided to protest. They wanted the committee to reinstate the girl. The committee then decided to ban her only for a year but this

too was not acceptable to the students who continued with their protest late in the evening.
