GOVERNOR JEFF LANDRY ANNOUNCED A STATE OF EMERGENCY WAS DECLARED AND THAT LOUISIANA WILL START DOING EXECUTION BY NITROGEN HYPOXIA, FORCING A PERSON TO BREATHE PURE NITROGEN GAS 17:22, 11
Feb 2025 The US state of Louisiana has declared its intention to begin executing death row inmates using nitrogen gas. Governor Jeff Landry unveiled the decision to commence executions by
nitrogen hypoxia, a method that involves forcing an individual to inhale pure nitrogen gas, leading to suffocation and organ failure. Alabama has been using this execution technique for some
time, having carried out a total of four nitrogen gas executions on death row inmates, who wore a gas mask during the process. "We will carry out these sentences and justice will be
dispensed," Landry stated in a press release. Demetrius Frazier, aged 52, was executed by nitrogen gas at a South Alabama prison on February 6, following his murder conviction for the
1991 rape and murder of Pauline Brown, 41. This marked the first execution in Alabama this year and the third in the US in 2025, after a lethal injection on Wednesday in Texas and another
last Friday in South Carolina. "First of all, I want to apologise to the family and friends of Pauline Brown. What happened to Pauline Brown should have never happened," Frazier
said before he was executed. He concluded by saying: "I love everybody on death row. Detroit Strong." In his last words, Frazier also criticised Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer
for not intervening after he requested to be sent back to serve a previous life sentence in her state. Article continues below Frazier's mother and anti-death penalty campaigners had
recently made heartfelt appeals to Governor Whitmer, urging her to bring Frazier back to his native Michigan to serve out his life sentence for the murder of a teenage girl before he was
handed over to Alabama years ago. READ MORE: Killer who raped and murdered woman in 1991 becomes fourth U.S. Inmate to die by controversial nitrogen gas method Michigan stands firm against
capital punishment. While in custody in Michigan, police reported that Frazier confessed to the 1992 murder of Brown. Speaking to The Detroit News prior to the execution, Whitmer lamented
that her predecessor, Rick Snyder, "unfortunately" agreed to extradite Frazier to Alabama, leaving the matter in the hands of officials there. "It's a really tough
situation," she told the publication. "I understand the pleas and concerns. Michigan is not a death penalty state." Like the first three individuals executed by nitrogen gas,
Frazier also shook or quivered on the gurney, albeit less intensely. Frazier was secured to a gurney with a blue-rimmed gas mask covering his entire face. The execution commenced around 6:10
pm, following a final check of the mask by a corrections officer. READ MORE: Woman 'ordered' Rottweiler to maul girl, 9, after 'I'm fixin' to kill her' threat
For the initial minute or two, Frazier moved his outstretched palms in a circular motion. At 6:12 pm, he ceased moving his hands. He seemed to grimace, quiver on the gurney, and take a
gasping breath. A minute later, he lowered both legs several inches off the gurney. Article continues below His breathing slowed to intermittent breaths at 6:14 pm, and by approximately 6:21
pm there was no visible movement. The curtains to the execution chamber were drawn at 6:29 pm. John Hamm, Alabama Corrections Commissioner, stated afterwards that the gas flowed for roughly
18 minutes and that instruments showed Frazier's heartbeat had ceased 13 minutes after the gas was introduced. JOIN THE DAILY STAR'S WHATSAPP FOR THE SEXIEST HEADLINES, SHOWBIZ
