known for playing Norm Peterson in the hit sitcom passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday morning, according to US outlet TMZ. Wendt was a fan favourite on Cheers, appearing from 1982


until the show wrapped in 1993. The cause of death has not yet been made public. The actor's family released in a statement, “George was a doting family man, a well-loved friend and


confidant to all of those lucky enough to have known him. "He will be missed forever. The family has requested privacy during this time.” Article continues below The beloved star


appeared in all 275 episodes of the iconic US sitcom as the beer-loving barfly - a role that earned him six nominations for outstanding supporting actor at the Primetime Emmy Awards. He was


such a hit with viewers that he was given his own spin-off, The George Wendt Show. However, the CBS comedy was cancelled after just six episodes. Looking back on his Cheers audition in a


2021 interview he joked that the only word he said in the pilot was “beer” and that he had to “look like a guy who wanted another one.” Before Cheers launched him to stardom, George had
