THE CGT WILL BE ORGANISING STRIKES AND MARCHES IN LARGE CITIES, IN THE FIRST MAJOR UNION PROTESTS OF THE HOLLANDE ERA ONE of the largest unions, the CGT, is calling a day of strikes and

marches on Tuesday “in defence of jobs and industry”. The action comes in a context of hikes in unemployment and restructuring plans in many businesses. It will be the first major union

protest under the Hollande government. Marches are planned in cities including Paris, Lyon, Marseille, Toulouse, Bordeaux, Rennes, Clermont-Ferrand and Epinal. The Paris protest will start

at 13.30 in Place d’Italie and march towards Montparnasse. The CGT says strikes are planned in many sectors including metallurgy, chemistry, civil servants, mines and energy, glass and

ceramics, the food industry, ports and docks, rail, health, and commerce. Employees of around 20 firms are also planning to protest outside the Mondial de l’Automobile motor show in Paris

tomorrow. The CGT says it expects about 1,000 people to take part, from firms that have been experiencing problems over jobs, such as PSA Peugeot-Citroën. Photo: iMAGINE - Fotolia.com
