OFFICER LISTED INTERESTS AS “THE CRUSADES, RACIST ATTACKS AND NATIONALISM” ON HIS PUBLICLY VISIBLE PROFILE A GENDARME who listed the “Crusades, racist attacks and nationalism” as interests
on his Facebook profile has been suspended pending an inquiry. According to Le Monde newspaper, the officer also claimed his political opinions were “extreme right, very extreme” on his
profile which was open to all those on the ‘France’ network. The officer, a member of the gendarme mobile group which is called in to keep order in parts of France, was also a member of
groups entitled “For the riot police to charge left-wing protests with swords”, “Long live the white race” and other racist groups. His profile contained pictures of him in his uniform. A
spokesman for head of the gendarmerie nationale told Le Monde that if the profile was confirmed it was “unacceptable and would be punished”. “The behaviour of this office is damaging to the
whole of the gendarmes mobiles who are highly-regulated professionals,” he added. Prime Minister François Fillon met with 53 gendarmes and police officers who had been injured during
recent riots in Martinique and Guadeloupe at L'hôtel Matignon - his official residence. Mr Fillon said security and the law should be applied “without exceptions and without
concessions.” He added that their actions during national strikes on the two islands had saved lives.
