HEAVY RAIN AND STRONG WINDS ARE EXPECTED TO CAUSE DISRUPTION AS A 'MAJOR CHANGE' TAKES PLACE IN UK WEATHER PATTERNS FROM THURSDAY 15:02, 20 Jan 2025 The UK is in for a "major
change" to the weather later this week that will see the country battered by yet more dramatic winter elements before January comes to a close. The Met Office has warned that a
phenomenon called 'explosive cyclogenesis' will bring a spell of very unsettled weather to our shores from Thursday, January 23. Warnings for "severe" stormy conditions
are already in place, with heavy rain and strong winds expected to cause disruption in some parts of the country into the weekend. A Yellow weather warning for "very strong" winds
has been issued for all day on Friday, January 24 continuing until midday on Saturday, January 25, affecting Northern Ireland and western Scotland. However, forecasters have advised to stay
up to date with the latest forecast as further warnings are likely to come into force later in the week. The current forecast for the North East states that following bright spells on
Tuesday and Wednesday, Thursday will be cloudy with rain across the region as conditions begin to change due to the low pressure systems, with the wet weather continuing throughout Friday.
Meanwhile, UK weather maps show bands of heavy rain and hail moving across the country from Thursday into Friday, with snow forecast in parts of Scotland. The dramatic change in weather is
the result of conditions over on the other side of the Atlantic, where a large, very cold pool of air over parts of North America is generating a stark contrast in temperatures across the
continent. This is acting to strengthen the jet stream, resulting in deeper low pressure systems being able to develop, which will then be steered across the Atlantic towards the UK. Article

phenomenon called 'explosive cyclogenesis', where the central pressure of a low at latitudes in which the UK lies drops 24 millibars or more in 24 hours. This is forecast to happen
on Thursday while the system is out over the Atlantic and it will be a mature feature by the time it reaches the UK." North Wales and north west England are expected to see the
heaviest rain, according to the Met Office, with 20-30mm expected to fall over hills. On Friday the strongest wind gusts are expected to be across Northern Ireland and western Scotland,
where gusts could hit 80mph or possibly higher along coastlines and high ground. Looking ahead to the weekend, Saturday is expected to remain breezy across the UK, with strong winds
persisting in the far north, although it will be drier with persistent heavy rain replaced by showers. However, by Sunday another area of low pressure could bring further wet and very windy
weather across the UK, the Met Office said. Article continues below JOIN OUR WHATSAPP COMMUNITIES ChronicleLive is now on WhatsApp and we want you to join our communities. We have a number
