THE GOVERNMENT HAS ANNOUNCED A U-TURN OVER THE WINTER FUEL ALLOWANCE 12:58, 04 Jun 2025 Keir Starmer has addressed upcoming changes to Winter Fuel Payments. More pensioners are expected to
receive the winter allowance later this year following a U-turn over unpopular changes last year. The Prime Minister was pressed by Conservative adversary Kemi Badenoch for more answers

Government has not explained who will now qualify for the payments, worth up to £300 to help with energy bills during the colder months. Article continues below It follows a furore over how
ministers determined who was eligible last year, resulting in millions of low-income pensioners missing out. The eligibility threshold is expected to be raised. There appears to be no
prospect of a complete reversal, amid a general acceptance among the public wealthy pensioners don't need the top-up, which can ultimately be spent on other things. Starmer reiterated
the eligibility criteria would be altered, opening up payments for more older people. But following the Prime Minister's answer, pensioners were left no clearer about who would get
winter payments this year. Ms Badenoch asked: "On behalf of the pensioners who want to know, can the Prime Minister be clear with us here and now how many of the 10 million people who
lost their Winter Fuel Payments will get it back?" The PM responded: "At the Budget, we took the right decisions to stabilise the economy because of the £22bn black hole that they

three trade deals. "So we will look again, as I said two weeks ago, at the eligibility for winter fuel and of course we'll set out how we pay for it." Article continues below
Starmer previously said details would likely be set out at the autumn Budget, however ministers are likely to come under increasing pressure to reveal their plans before then, when winter
will be just around the corner.
