If you’ve been waiting, perhaps for years, for a refund on a product you returned to Amazon, your day may finally have come. The company recently announced it’s giving refunds to some
customers who never received payment for items sent back to the retailer. “Following a recent internal review, we identified a very small subset of returns where we issued a refund without
the payment completing, or where we could not verify that the correct item had been sent back to us so no refund was issued,” Amazon spokesperson Maxine Tagay said in a statement. “There is
no action required from customers to receive the refunds, and we have fixed the payment issue and made process changes to more promptly contact customers about unresolved returns going
forward.” It’s as yet unclear how many or which customers will get refunds and whether they’ll receive the full amount they may be expecting. WHY IS AMAZON GIVING THE REFUNDS NOW? According
to Bloomberg, the refunds from Amazon are part of a class action lawsuit brought against the retail giant for reversing refunds from customers who complied with its return policy by dropping
off items at Amazon kiosks. The company initially gave refunds to customers but then charged them full price as if the product never arrived at an Amazon warehouse, according to the
lawsuit. The policy was created to fight potential fraud, such as someone buying an item from Amazon and returning either an empty box or a fake product to receive a refund, Bloomberg
reports. Amazon tried to dismiss the lawsuit, which was filed in 2023, but a federal judge in Seattle denied the request in April. AN ‘UNRESOLVED PRODUCT RETURN’ One customer, Steven Pope,
says he was issued a refund of nearly $1,800 from Amazon for a TV he bought in 2018. Pope wrote about the surprise refund on LinkedIn. “WILD - Amazon just refunded me finally for a return in
2018!” he said in the post. “$1,798.81 is being credited to me today in 2025 after 7 years. I'm probably not the only customer who has experienced this but isn't that crazy!? 7
years to payout a return???” Pope posted a screenshot of the email from Amazon describing the issue as an “unresolved product return,” adding that “no action [is] required from you to
receive the refund.” TIPS FOR SHOPPING ON AMAZON Although Amazon is issuing long-awaited refunds to some customers, there are specific items you cannot return on Amazon no matter the
situation. These items include hazardous materials, digital downloads, gift cards, food and spirits, and prescription medicines. If you’re looking to save money while shopping on Amazon, you
can do things like not pay the first price you see on the right side of the product page, browse the “Outlet” and “Under $10” sections, not rush to buy a protection plan, and look for
coupons and deals.
