The Remembrance Garden in Redcar has been restored and transformed after £20,000 grant. The garden, which is opposite the Cenotaph on Coatham Road, was created to pay tribute to service

personnel, both past and present and to provide a space for the public to visit to pay tribute to their lost loved ones. It stands on the site of the former Zetland Club, which was destroyed

in an air raid on October 21, 1941 with the loss of fifteen lives. A small group of Trustees manages the garden, which is used by both veterans and cadets for commemoration events. However,

its main purpose is as a quiet place in a busy area, where the local community can sit, reflect and remember. The garden received a £20,000 from Enovert Community Trust, provided through

the Landfill Communities Fund (LCF). The restoration project involved removing and rebuilding the dwarf perimeter wall, upgrading and powder coating the wrought iron fencing and installing

an information board. Billy Wells, Trustee, said: “The Trustees would like to thank Enovert Community Trust for its kind donation of £20,000 towards the improvements to the Redcar Garden of

Remembrance. It is a very important space, and the grant has enabled the Trustees to replace the outside wall, which was starting to crumble away and become unsafe, and improve the overall

appearance of the garden.” A local horticulturist has volunteered to maintain the planting and the general upkeep of the garden. Angela Haymonds, Trust Manager of Enovert Community Trust,

said: “The restoration of the Remembrance Garden was a great project for the Trust to support as it is such a focal point for the local community. The new wall and railings look fantastic,

and we hope that many people can enjoy the garden long into the future.” FOR TEESSIDE UPDATES AND BREAKING NEWS DIRECT TO YOUR INBOX EVERY DAY, GO HERE TO SIGN UP TO OUR FREE NEWSLETTER JOIN
