The former Manchester United captain, famed for his physical approach as a player, has issued a passionate plea for players and managers to salvage a game being swamped by blatant cheating.

Keane might appear an unlikely standard bearer for improved behaviour on the pitch, but admits he made big mistakes – including the infamous verbal barrage he gave referee Andy D'Urso after

the official awarded Middlesbrough a penalty seven years ago at Old Trafford, a reaction that angered Sir Alex Ferguson, with Keane saying: "That incident with D'Urso was a learning curve

for me."

He added: "Managers and players have to take the responsibility. While I went and kicked a few players, I'm on about conning the referee. There are a lot out there who are trying to pull one

over the referee by diving, and then chasing the referee. We all know the players. I could tell you them, very high-profile ones but I would not give them the time of day and that's why I'm

glad I'm not playing any more.

"It's not just a foreign thing. It drives me crazy, going down like they have been shot, faking injury, then 30 seconds later running around. If I had done that, after the game when you have

to see your family, they would have disowned me."
